The Northern Irish champion hails BBC's top sports triumph with twin honors.

Moments before the announcement, a anxious thought darted through Rory McIlroy's mind. He said he was hoping, "Please don't let it be a racing champion this time."

"This has been a great night for golf," McIlroy declared. "The sport was honored in such a significant way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a huge moment for golf, and with any luck we can capitalize on that."

In this instance, however, there was no dramatic upset. The outcome was clear, allowing a delighted McIlroy to savor a memorable evening for both himself and the team winners, who were honored as team of the year.

Constant Motion

Instead of opting to stay for the official reception, McIlroy was already plotting his upcoming event. After played in a tournament in Florida and jetted to the UK, he was returning immediately to the sunshine state.

"It's been a frantic 24 hours," the golfer noted. "I'm looking forward to a little bit of rest over Christmas."

That said, McIlroy insisted he has no intention to rest on his laurels, even after completing the set of all four majors earlier in the year. "My belief is I've got a few good years in me," he asserted.

"Further big titles, order of merit titles, team competitions, that's the aim. But as long as you feel like you can keep getting better and have the hunger, that's the most important thing."

At the same time, Ryder Cup partner Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to accept the collective trophy, also applauded golf's stellar night and his close friend's individual success.

"They are the moments that will remain with us indefinitely so to get the public's recognition for that is really cool," he commented. "And to be there Rory receive that award, I think he deserves it so much."

Upon hearing that McIlroy was only the third player from golf to win the award in its 71-year history, Fleetwood smiled before quipping, "We're not the most popular are we!"

Future Goals

He is aiming to secure his maiden major next year but he recognized McIlroy still desires more success. "As long as you want to be the ultimate competitor, and you're still motivated, you'll find things to work on," Fleetwood explained.

Football Loyalty

As he was leaving, an additional topic was raised. As a huge Manchester United fan, he has been requested to display his trophies at Old Trafford before. So could he be persuaded to do it again after his recent triumphs?

"Provided that they quit letting in so many goals on their own pitch," he replied with a laugh. "They're getting better. There's a hint of optimism around."

After a truly spectacular season, it's little surprise that the champion golfer is focusing on the bright side.
