This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new opening credits. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.
Overall, the opening appears stunning. However, I felt that an element was missing in the music selection.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional song composed by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece from the official score of the same name, the second release put out by the production company's music division their music brand. It's a great sentimental option, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will love its inclusion.
Personally, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Including singing from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its tone is a little off.
Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the series will have some changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
