The House of Mouse's Live-Action <em>Moana</em> Trailer Looks Strikingly Similar to a Cartoon

The debut preview for the forthcoming live-action adaptation of Moana has arrived. Is it surprising that, like most of Disney's live-action remakes, it appears a lot like an animated film and much less like a genuine live-action movie?

Spectacular Visuals That Keep an Cartoonish Look

The preview for the new iteration of Moana is undeniably stunning. It includes sweeping visuals, beautiful soundtrack, and familiar personalities. However, it still looks like an cartoon. The over-the-top visuals show characters flying, water defying gravity, and Maui changing into an insect and a winged creature. Each of these effects is achieved through digital effects and computer animation. Much like earlier Disney adaptations—such as The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and The Jungle Book—the level of CGI is so extensive that it raises the debate: what defines these movies “real-life” other than the marketing label?

Narrative and Songs Audiences Know and Love

Regardless, this latest Moana appears to be a retelling of the first story, including fresh versions of the beloved songs. As described in an released summary, “Moana heeds the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, voyages beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the infamous demigod Maui on an unforgettable journey to restore prosperity to her people.”

New Performers and Familiar Stars

Meanwhile, the trailer includes a sample of the updated version on “How Far I’ll Go,” sung by Catherine Laga'aia. The young actor is taking over the role of Moana from Auliʻi Cravalho, who voiced the heroine in the original movies.

A key figure who hasn’t been replaced is Dwayne Johnson, who will once again be playing Maui. Of course, that character already resembled Johnson, so having him play the part in the live-action remake appears logical.
