The acclaimed crime series Line of Duty will make a comeback for its seventh installment, confirmed by the BBC.

An upcoming six-part series created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Belfast this spring, as confirmed by the network.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The last season concluded in recent years with a finale that drew in over 17 million audience members. Speculation about a new season have been widespread for some time, but official word only came this week.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to tackle misconduct within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.

However, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans track the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new season."

He added: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called being part of the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.

Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm so excited the show is returning! Eager to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."

"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."

Series Legacy

The drama premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.

Broadcasters has not yet announced when the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of season six brought the long-running storyline about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers indicated at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

However, the network announced on Tuesday that a new season is now being produced.
