Sir Humphrey Burton, a towering figure in cultural television, has passed away at the age of 94.
The respected film-maker, who transformed classical music on television, passed away at home surrounded by his loved ones.

Born in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, in 1931, Burton rose to become one of the industry’s most admired broadcasters, introducing the wonder of classical music to the general public.
He was the BBC’s head of music and arts in the 1960s and 1970s, winning awards for programmes such as The Golden Ring.
The creation of the Young Musician of the Year in 1978, spearheaded by, propelled the careers of artists like Nicola Benedetti.
The news was met with widespread tribute, with many pointing to his definitive role for generations of creators.

An honorary society celebrated his work, declaring he had done more than most to reveal music's marvels and established a high bar.
